Why I Put Butter in My Coffee Every Morning

Sep 10, 2026 | Explanations

Every morning begins with the same important decision: Which Mickey Mouse mug am I going to use?  Once that crisis has been resolved, I pour myself a cup of coffee and add butter. No sugar, flavored creamer, syrup, whipped cream, or cookie crumbs disguised as breakfast—just coffee and butter.

Most people call this Bulletproof Coffee, although the traditional version includes both butter and MCT oil. Since I only use butter, mine is technically “bulletproof-style coffee.” Whatever we call it, it has become an important part of my ketovore routine.

Yes, I Really Put Butter in My Coffee

If you have never tried butter in coffee, I realize it may sound strange. Of course, we routinely put cream in coffee, and butter is another dairy fat, so it isn’t as crazy as it first sounds.  The secret is mixing it well. Dropping a chunk of butter into coffee and watching an oil slick form across the top is not especially appetizing. Blended properly, however, the butter gives the coffee a rich, smooth, creamy texture.

My recipe is wonderfully uncomplicated:

  • Freshly brewed coffee
  • Butter
  • A favorite mug

That’s it. I’m not trying to recreate a coffee-shop dessert with 14 ingredients and a name that takes longer to say than the drink takes to consume.

Why I Drink It Every Morning

The biggest reason is simple: it satisfies me.  One of the reasons ketovore works better for me than a conventional low-calorie diet is that fat and protein help me feel full. When I start my morning with butter coffee, I’m not immediately thinking about breakfast, doughnuts, cereal, or whatever someone left in the office kitchen.  It helps me comfortably delay my first real meal of the day. That has been especially useful while practicing one meal a day, or OMAD.

There is also something powerful about having a dependable routine. I don’t wake up and negotiate with myself about breakfast. I don’t have to study a menu, count the blueberries in a bowl, or decide whether a “healthy” muffin is actually a cupcake wearing khakis.  I make my coffee, add the butter, and begin my day.  The fewer food decisions I have to make, the fewer opportunities I have to make a bad one.

Does Butter Coffee Break a Fast?

Here is where we need to be honest.  Yes, butter coffee breaks a strict fast.  Butter contains calories, and consuming calories is not the same as drinking black coffee or water. I may postpone solid food until later in the day, but I am not claiming that my butter coffee is calorie-free fasting.  Some people use phrases such as “fat fasting” because butter contains almost no carbohydrates and may allow them to remain in ketosis. That may be useful terminology when describing a personal routine, but it shouldn’t blur the basic truth: if you add butter, you are consuming energy.

For me, the more useful question is not, “Can I technically call this fasting?”  The better question is, “Does this help me follow my eating plan and make better choices throughout the day?”  Right now, the answer is yes.

Butter Coffee Is a Tool, Not Magic

Putting butter in coffee does not automatically burn body fat.  That distinction matters because it is easy to assume that eating more fat forces the body to burn more stored fat. Your body may certainly use the butter for energy—but that does not necessarily mean it is reaching into its savings account and withdrawing body fat.  Butter coffee still contains calories. If I add more and more butter while continuing to eat the same amount of food, those calories can eventually work against my weight-loss goal.

My butter coffee needs to replace something, not simply become an extra meal in a mug.  If it helps me skip a high-carbohydrate breakfast, avoid snacking, and comfortably reach my planned meal, it is doing its job. If I drink it alongside bacon, eggs, cheese, and a second breakfast worthy of a hobbit, I probably shouldn’t blame the scale when it refuses to cooperate.

How It Fits Into My Ketovore Restart

During my current restart, I have dropped from 197 pounds to 186. I’m pleased with that progress, but I’m also paying attention to the habits that make the plan sustainable.  My biggest challenges are rarely knowing what I should eat. I already know that meat, eggs, and other low-carbohydrate foods work well for me. The challenge is staying consistent when life includes business lunches, school board events, football games, and food that seems to reproduce whenever I enter the room.

My morning butter coffee gives me one dependable win at the beginning of the day.  It doesn’t guarantee that I will make good choices later, but it helps me start in the right direction. Sometimes one good decision makes the next one easier.

Is Butter Coffee for Everyone?

No—and it doesn’t need to be.  Some people dislike the taste. Others prefer black coffee, heavy cream, ghee, or MCT oil. Some people feel better after eating breakfast, while others have no trouble waiting until later in the day.

Butter is also high in saturated fat. Anyone managing high cholesterol, heart disease, gallbladder problems, or another medical condition should consider the entire diet and consult a qualified healthcare professional rather than accepting health advice from a man drinking butter out of a Mickey Mouse mug.

That seems fair.  I’m sharing what I do and why it works for me. I’m not claiming everyone needs to do the same thing.

My Simple Butter Coffee Rule

My rule is this:  The butter coffee must make the rest of my day easier—not simply add more calories to it.  I pay attention to whether it controls my hunger, reduces cravings, and helps me wait for my planned meal. I also watch what happens on the scale over time.  If my progress stalls, the butter in my coffee will be one of the things I evaluate. Ketovore foods can still be overeaten, and liquid calories are particularly easy to overlook.

For now, however, it remains a simple morning ritual that I enjoy and that supports my plan.

The Bottom Line

My morning coffee is not a miracle drink. It doesn’t erase yesterday’s mistakes, melt fat while I sit at my desk, or grant me immunity from carbohydrates for the rest of the day.  It is coffee with butter.  But it is also warm, satisfying, easy to prepare, and helpful in controlling my morning hunger. It gives me a consistent way to begin another ketovore day—and consistency is ultimately more valuable than any nutritional magic trick.

Besides, everything tastes better in a Mickey Mouse mug.
