Second Month of Ketovore is in the Books

Aug 1, 2023 | Her Journey

The dog days of summer are upon us and it is shaping up to be a very hot one here in Texas this 2023! Good thing hamburgers are on plan because there were a whole lot of them this past July. The number of days over 100 degrees was absolutely crazy! When the outdoor pools do not provide the relief you expect, you know it is hot! With sadly, no relief in sight.

I started this ketovore way of eating without any specific metabolic diagnoses, just the visual observation of being overweight. While that is probably a good thing overall, it makes it harder to measure non weight related success. The two medical issues I have are not ones that I hear discussed often, so it will be interesting to see if I see any improvement in those areas. As I approach my 55th trip around the sun, I have dealt with bunions on both feet for 42 of those years, doing what I can to avoid surgery. I am also dealing with a large ovarian fibroid tumor. My first (5 inches in diameter) was surgically removed when I gave birth to my first son via emergency cesarean section.

I am enjoying chasing the sales and markdowns of all kinds and cuts of meat, not only for the week ahead, but also for bulk purchases to be divided into portions and frozen accordingly. I spent several days going down the rabbit hole of buying fresh meat from a local farmer, like a half a cow. That price point is a bit too steep for us at the moment and we came to the conclusion we would also need an extra freezer. The investigation was worth the time and we will go down that road when finances allow. For now, I am happy to know my kitchen freezer is well stocked with meat.
I lost 6 pounds this month. I have a feeling that slow and steady is going to be the name of the game for me. I smile at the fact that the numbers are indeed going in the right direction! I am realizing that the heat is having a much more dramatic effect draining my energy levels than in years past. I laughingly say that my basal body temperature has risen five degrees because I am overheated literally all the time. At some point I will get to my GYN and see what’s up with my current menopausal hormonal state as I am long past hot flashes and night sweats.
I am tickled that my 13 year old son is watching us and asking about why more meat and why less pasta. He is voluntarily enjoying carnivore breakfasts and asking for less snacks and desserts. I am super proud of his choices.
